Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Harlem luminary's Roc-A-Fella debut by crowning its best track. On August 2, 2021, the original lineup of the Diplomats were participant in a rap battle with The Lox via Verzuz. In celebration of Cam'ron's 44th birthday on Feb. 4, XXL honors the Harlem legend by highlighting 10 of the best studio albums to come out of the Dipset camp to date.
Cam'ron eventually demanded a release from Epic, and signed with Roc-A-Fella Records, then owned by his childhood friend Damon Dash. Cam'ron released his third album, Come Home with Me through Roc-A-Fella. The album featured numerous guest appearances from Juelz Santana and Jim Jones. In late 2018, they released their first official album in 14 years, Diplomatic Ties, under Empire Distribution. In 2021, they participated in a Verzuz-related battle with The Lox. The home of the hustler and trendsetter, Harlem has played an integral role in helping instill a relentless grind and a flair for the dramatic in its inhabitants. This has proved true particularly in hip-hop, as a number of the storied neighborhood's favorite sons have incorporated the money-making ethos learned in those stomping grounds in the construction of their empires. Among this group is Cam'ron, who flipped a long-shot bet on himself into one of the most impactful movements in modern rap history.
However, in May 2013, Freekey Zekey revealed it no longer recorded for Interscope. In February 2011, it was reported The Diplomats had signed a record deal with Interscope Records. They also revealed plans for a reunion album to be released under the label. On November 15, 2017, Jim Jones announced on his Instagram that a new Diplomats single was to be released that night, titled "Once Upon a Time", and featuring him and Cam'ron. On November 22, 2017, The Diplomats revealed on MTV's TRL that they would be releasing an EP along with a documentary in the near future.

After a pair of solo albums, 1998's Confessions of Fire and 2000's S.D.E., Cam'ron rounded up his crew, The Diplomatsa.k.a Dipset, and linked with longtime friend Dame Dash, who signed Cam'ron to a record deal with Roc-A-Fella Records. Jim Jones, Juelz Santanaand rapper/hype-man Freekey Zekeyjoined Cam'ron on his Roc-A-Fella debut LP,Come Home With Me.Juelz, who appeared on the singles "Oh Boy" and "Hey Ma," became a breakout star. The following year, Cam and crew formed like Voltron for Diplomatic Immunity, a platinum-certified double-album that showcased the four core members, as well as additional talent like Hell Rell. In 2001, following Cam'ron's signing, the group secured a recording contract with Roc-A-Fella Records. It subsequently began recording its debut album, Diplomatic Immunity, and released it on the aforementioned labels in March 2003. Following tensions and controversy between Cam'ron and Jay-Z, the group subsequently severed ties with Roc-A-Fella and signed with indie record label Koch Records.
Reaching out to longtime friend and fellow Harlem native Damon Dash to help facilitate a release from Epic, Cam’ron gained his walking papers in 2001, making him a free agent at an opportune time. Deciding to remain with Dash and sign to the brash mogul’s own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, Cam’ron began to put his plan for domination into motion. In 2008, Jim Jones cut ties with ByrdGang rapper and former Dipset affiliate Max B over a sequence of financial and ethical disputes. Jones and Max B became involved in a bitter feud, exchanging numerous diss tracks and constantly bad-mouthing each other on interviews. It displayed the breadth of Cam’s talents, not just as a lyricist and hitmaker, but as a bonafide leader of a movement. Cam’s mesh of supreme technical lyricism, charisma, hilarity, and storytelling blended perfectly over the soundscape, solidifying both his and Dipset’s presence as a pillar of New York rap. He also confirmed that he would be hosting the mixtape along with DJ's/Producers DJ Khaled, Swizz Beatz & DJ Mustard. The following week, Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, and Freekey Zekey released a new track called "Have My Money". Writer began his prison sentence at Ulster Correctional Facility, in New York. On May 15, 2014, the original members of The Diplomats reunited for a brand new single produced by Just Blaze and entitled "Dipshits".
And with nearly two decades since they initially took the world by storm, Cam'ron and company continue to put in work, individually and as a unit, a testament to their staying power and strength in numbers. Enter Roc-A-Fella, the towering movement co-led by his fellow Harlemite and longtime friend Dame Dash. Cam’ron has said that the two men had some kind of discrepancy at the time, but Dame overlooked it and gave Cam a second chance in the industry. Not only were they friends, Cam’ron was one of the most talented lyricists in New York City at the time. He came up sharpening his bars alongside Big L, Mase, and his cousin Bloodshed in Children of the Corn.
"Daydreaming" was a later single released in 2003 but failed to duplicate the success from his earlier singles. The sixth cut and title track “Come Home with Me” features Cam’s fellow Dipset member Juelz Santana and production from Rsonist of The Heatmakerz. Cam and his Dipset brethren’s uptown swagger left listeners around the globe infatuated and helped spark one of the biggest movements of a generation. It remains Cam’ron’s most commercially successful album of his career and is believed by many to be his best to date. Scoring the Ma$e-assisted single “Horse & Carriage,” the album was certified gold, a promising start for the Uptown native. Charts, Queens poet Nas having returned to form with a comeback album, and Staten Island and Westchester County keeping some semblance of the gritty golden era vibes that defined the decade prior, Harlem was losing steam. In a September 2008 interview, Hell Rell stated that he no longer has a contractual obligation to Cam'ron or Jim Jones.
In 1999, fellow Harlem-based rapper Juelz Santana joined the group. "Oh Boy" held the number one spot on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles for five straight weeks, the number one spot on the Hot Rap Tracks and peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100. The second hit was "Hey Ma", which reached number three on the Hot 100 and number eight on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his biggest hit.
The album served as both an introduction to The Diplomats and a stepping stone for the rest of the group to be signed to Roc-A-Fella. In January 2013, Juelz Santana indicated that the album was still coming. He would later also promise a new Diplomats single to be released "soon". The group hosted a reunion concert in New York on March 25, 2013, to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Diplomatic Immunity's release. In May 2013, Freekey Zekey revealed that the group was no longer signed to Interscope Records. The 15-track project is a quintessential time capsule of 2000s rap.
